The British version of the American Sikorsky S-55/H-19 Chickasaw,
built under license in 1950, although the prototype did not fly until
August 1953 following major redesign of the main-rotor gearbox.
Powered by Pratt & Whitney R-1340-40 Wasp engine, providing 600hp.
This painting shows one of two, used by the Ice Patrol Ship
HMS Protector, during the 1950s and 60s. They proved invaluable
for survey work, transporting equipment and men, on and off the ice.
