Broadsword-class Type 22 Batch 2 Frigate
Displacing 4,100 tons standard and a length of 148.1 metres, she was launched from the Swan Hunter shipyard at Wallsend on the 26 March 1986 and commissioned on the 26 July 1988. HMS Sheffield along with her sister ship HMS Coventry, were so named to replace the two Type 42 destroyers, lost during the Falklands War in 1982. The main engines were two Rolls-Royce Spey SM1A gas turbines, giving 9700 shp and a range of 4500 miles at 18 knots. Armament consisted of four Exocet single cell missile launchers, two Sea Wolf 6 barrelled launchers and two triple STWS torpedo tubes. The complement was 273. Ship’s motto: 'With God's help our labour is successful'. After 14 years service, she was decommissioned on the 5 November 2002 and sold to the Chilean Navy - commissioning on the 4 September 2003 as the Almirante Williams (FF-19).
