Sandown-class Mine Countermeasures Vessel
Built by Vosper Thornycroft, at Woolston, Southampton and launched on 16 April 1999, by the ship’s Lady Sponsor, Lady Lisa Spencer. HMS Bangor commissioned on 26 July 2000.
She is one of originally twelve Sandown-class Mine Counter-Measures Vessels (MCMV) in the Royal Navy, constructed with glass-reinforced plastic (GRP) hulls.
Her homeport is HMNB Clyde, where she is part of the MCM1 Squadron.
The primary responsibility of the Sandown-class is to seek out, detect and destroy mines, using the SeaFox unmanned underwater vehicle and a team of highly skilled Mine Clearance Divers.
