The Brazilian frigate was built by Vosper Thorncroft and launched on 15 April 1976, she was commissioned on 13 March 1978. She has a displacement of 3,800 tons full load and a length of 424 ft. Powered by 2 shaft CODOG from 2 Rolls-Royce Olympus gas turbines and 4 MTU 18,000 hp diesels, giving a top speed of 28 knots. Armament is MM-40 Exocet anti-ship missile, ASPIDE anti-aircraft missile, 1 Vickers 4.5 in gun Mk 8, two BAE Systems Trinity Mk 3 AA single gun turrets, 2 x 3 torpedo tubes for Mk 46 torpedoes and two double barrel Bofors Boroc anti-submarine rocket launchers.
She carries one Westland Super Lynx Mk 21A helicopter.
