AugustaWestland Merlin HM1
AugustaWestland HM! flying above a Type 23 frigate

Developed as a joint enterprise between Italy and the UK, being
manufactured at Vergiate and Yeovil, the two companies merged
in 2000. It first flew in 1987 and went to sea with the Royal Navy
in 2002. Powered by a Rolls-Royce Turbomeca RTM322 engine,
driving an 18.59 metre, five bladed rotor, made of carbon glass
and edged with titanium alloy. The Merlin operates as an
anti-submarine warfare unit, and can be flown from all major
types of RN warships. In 2012, 30 aircraft were upgraded to
HM2, with new mission systems and a digital cockpit.
